Pale Ale

Kooinda: Pale Ale (Melb) – Displaying a bigger hop profile than your average pale, this effort from the boys at kooinda is winning craft beer lovers the country over with its light carbonation yet full-bodied flavour. 4.7%, $9-/330ml

Stone & Wood: Pacific Ale (Byron Bay) - Only loosely falling under the 'Pale Ale' moniker. Tricky to categorise, this Beautiful, floral ale is more a character study of the 'Galaxy' hop variety. Light, yet chewy with an addictive, creamy mouthfeel  4.4%,  $9-/330ml

Meantime: London Pale (Greenwich,UK) – Kentish Goldings hops are the hero of the story here, delivering a refreshing bitterness with a touch of malt sweetness in this great English-style Pale Ale 4.3%, $13-/330ml

St-Ambroise: Pale Ale (Montreal, CANADA) – From the stalwarts of Canadian craft brewing, this American style Pale has wonderful hop/malt balance and a lingering clean finish 5%,$11-/341ml

 

Indian Pale Ale

Jamieson: The Beast (VIC) – A very drinkable, well rounded IPA. Lashings of hop character with a solid, almost caramel-like malt backbone 7%,$11-/330ml

Bridge Road: Bling (Beechworth, VIC) - Sweet biscuity malt on the nose and palate, with a big  hop finish 5.8%, $9-/330ml

Red Duck: Bengal(Camperdown, NSW) – The brewer describes this Ale as a “homage to the original British IPA’s”. Perfect for the new-comer to the style, due to its moderate hop influence and well balanced malt body 7%, $12-/330ml

Feral: Hop hog (Swan Valley, WA) – This US-style IPA is not for the faint of heart. Taking home the ‘Champion Ale’ award at the 2009 Australian International Beer awards, this beer delivers Beautifully balanced hop bitterness 5.8%, $14-/330ml

 

Wheat Beer

Hitachino Nest: White (Naka, Japan) – From one of the very few Japanese craft breweries, this Belgian-style White ale has a light floral aroma and a body displaying nutmeg and citrus peel 5%, $14-330ml

Schofferhofer: Hefeweizen (Germany)- A traditional Bavarian cloudy wheat beer. With hints of Banana, Clove and Vanilla 5.0%,  $13-/500ml

Feral: White (Swan Valley, WA) – Using 50% barley and 50% wheat, this unfiltered wheat beer uses traditional Belgian yeast strains giving flavours of coriander and orange peel 4.6%, $9-/330ml

Schneider Weisse: Aventinus (Germany) – A strong, dark, unfiltered Wheat beer. Falling into the ‘Eisbock’ style, which means the beer is partially frozen, and due to the water content in the beer freezing quicker than the alcohol, the ice can be removed, thus concentrating the flavour. Displays intense flavours of dark fruit, raisin and banana. 12%, $16-/330ml

 

Amber Ale

Mountain Goat: Hightail Ale (Richmond, VIC) - With toffee and a little  fruit on the nose, leading to a sweet, toasted malt body. Finishes with just enough hop presence to tie it all together 4.5%,$9-/330ml

Endeavour 2010 Reserve Amber Ale: (Contracted, NSW) – A good example of a contracted brew still tasting great. Offering up sweet spice with a bitter chocolate finish, this is a well-rounded winter beers. 2%, $9-/330ml

      

Brown Ale

Wychwood: HobGoblin: (Oxfordshire, England) - The roasted malt lends itself well to a dried fruit and almost chocolaty mouth feel. With just enough hop presence to balance the bittersweet in this fine English Brown ale. 5.2%, $16- /500ml

Jamieson: Brown Ale: (VIC) – A very approachable English-style Brown Ale. Soft bittering based around a medium to light caramel body. 4.9%, $9-/330ml

 

Porter/Stout

3 Ravens: ‘Black’ Stout (Thornbury, VIC) – Displaying very little resemblance to its Guinness stable-mate, this Aussie Oatmeal stout is quite mellow, Bitter (but not too much), with a well-rounded caramel chocolate body. 5.5%, $9-/330ml

Red Duck: Porter (Camperdown, NSW) – A very complex beer, not as dark as some stouts/porters but massive on flavour. Hints of treacle and liquorice, but as the brewery suggests, “see what you can find”. 6.4%, $11-/330ml

 

Belgian Style

Victory Brewing: Triple(Pennsylvania, USA) -The richness of German malts and Belgian yeast are tempered by a sparkling approach and overall light body. Abundant herbal, fruity notes make this one to savour. 9.5%, $14.50/355ml

Chimay: Grand Reserve (Scourmont Abbey, Belgium) –The big-daddy of trappist beers. In the style of a strong Belgian dark ale, this beer exudes elegance. Displaying characters of Fig, burnt brown sugar, exotic spices and nut, with a lengthy medium-dry finish. 9.0%, $30-/750ml

            

Pilsner

Holgate: Pilsner (Woodend, VIC) – Brewed in the traditional Czech way, using shed-loads of Saaz nobles hops. A clean, crispy pale Lager that’s great for sessioning but has enough flavour to savour on its own. 4.5%, $9-/330ml

 

Cider

Rekorderlig: Apple Cider (Vimmerby, Sweden) – A delicious medium-sweet cider with mild acidity and made with pure Swedish spring water.

4.5%, $11-/500ml

 

Mid-Strength Ale

Murrays: Punch & Judy (Nelson Bay, NSW) – Incredibly full flavoured for a mid-strength beer. Loosely based on the ‘English Special Bitter’ style. Sweet caramel-like body balanced with bitterness from NZ hop varieties. 3.9%,$9-/330ml

 

Lager

Shmaltz Brewing (Coney Island, USA) – This almost amber coloured lager from Schmaltz uses 8 different malts and 6 different hop varieties to deliver a beer of huge flavour. 5.5%, $12-/355ml
